  • Terrarium Update

I just noticed that I haven't posted an update of my terrariums in more than a year. I've made a lot of changes since then. I changed out most of the plants, and added two extra mistking misting nozzles to each terrarium. Since adding the extra nozzles, I've noticed a drastic increase in the growth rates of the live plants. The dried sphagnum moss I used for the cork bark mosaic has come back to life in some areas, and random other mosses have sprung up. The goldfish plant with the flower is at the end of it's flowering season, and recently had more than 16 flowers at one time. All of the bromeliads have sprouted robust roots and thrown offshoots. The terrariums are lit by a mix of LEDs and Exo Terra UVB bulbs.

Here's a link to my last update of the terrariums:http://www.pangeareptile.com/forums/...ms!&highlight=

Here's a few pictures showing the overall set up. I'm glad that I blacked out the sides and lower front panels with contact paper. I think it makes them look much more refined.

The 18x18x24 terrarium on the left is lit by a 13W Jungle Dawn LED bulb, a 13W Exo Terra de-ionizing UVB bulb, and an 18" Currant USA satellite + LED. The 18x18x18 Exo Terra terrarium on the right is lit by a 13W de-ionizing UVB bulb and an 18" Currant USA satelitte plus pro LED.

Amazing setups! Great job! do you ever have a molding problem? and do you use Arthropods/Springtails to clean up in them?

Thanks! No, I've never had a molding problem. I have tropical springtails and dwarf white isopods in both terrariums.

I don't have much experience in naturalistic setups, but I would imagine its a PITA to clean the plant leaves and such, as they are fixed into the setup. Am I wrong?
Also, how would you determine how many of each (Springtails/Isopods) you would need? Is it by cubic volume of substrate, minus drainage?

I don't know what you mean by cleaning the plant leaves? They're all living plants. If a leaf or flower falls off, it's just broken down by the springtails and isopods, and incorporated into the substrate. Some of the vines do grow quickly, and I just trim them back to keep them in check. I just bought a small starter culture of springtails and isopods and let them do their thing.

I was meaning, having to clean the geckos urinate, and fecal off of the plants... and okay, so there is no certain amount you need?..

Any waste from the geckos breaks down really fast. I've never had a problem with that... unless they drop it in their food or water. I've never seen any certain number of isopods or sprintails needed for a certain size terrarium.

Thanks! I'd love to one day have an large customized terrarium. Once I settle down and have my own house, I think it will be possible.

wow this is amazing! i would love to do something like this with my current terrarium but with cork bark being 20 a side it can get quite expensive!

Did you use Insulating / expanding foam to create the "ledges" and overhang at the top? i am thinking of doing something like that but how would i go about doing it with corkbark?should i just do it over the corkbark and then silicon coco fibre over it with a bit of moss to grow?

This old thread has a few pictures showing some of the construction. I used planting baskets so I could give the plants some soil. I cut a small hole in the bottom of each basket, and popped some tubing through the hole. I used masking tape to keep the baskets in place, and then sprayed the expanding foam. Once it dried, I ripped out the tubing, leaving behind a drainage tract through the foam for the plants. Then I just used an old steak knife to carve it. I repeated the same process for attaching the cork bark over the baskets.

Thats amazing :O I dont think mine will turn out QUITE so professional xD but i will give it a whirl! I'm using cork bark boards and dont want to cover the WHOLE board with foam otherwise its kind of a waste of 20 / $40 But i will make a cave and some ledges with it

If I had a drainage bulkhead on each terrarium, these would be perfect to house some dart frogs. Exo Terra and Zoo Med doors just aren't sealed well enough to deal with fruit flies.
