  • DIY Vines

    Hello again everyone,
I am thinking of making my own vines for my future vivarium. Does anyone have any exp on this?
This is how I am thinking of doing it. I'd like to get some tubing or hose of some sort, cover it with some silicone and stick coco fiber to that.
The problem is I'm not sure what kind of tubing would be ok for vivarium use. Obviously it cant have any harmfull chemicals and preferably not something that would degrade over time.
Would surgical tubing work, or garden hose? I'm not really a tubing conosour so i just dont have many ideas for what would be safe.
    Thanks for any imput!

    I love replying to myself...
Just found some awesome insparation material.

This is kind of what im going for but more viny and less rooty. They use polypropaline rope and pvc pipe as the base. (I'm asuming both of those are safe if being used for dart frogs.)
So rigidity is the issue here.Thats why I am thinking hose or something. If medical tubing is a possibility i would probably just fill it with scilicone after I get it where I like and hope that it will keep its shape.

I've used nylon rope that I bought by the foot in a couple of widths and coated it with 100% silicone, then pressed coco fiber into it. I'm happy with how they turned out. They became a little more rigid when the silicone cured, but were still pretty flexible.

I did mine just like Shutter with different widths of nylon rope, coated in silicone & pressed into a mix of eco earth & forest moss (ground up). They look great!

I've done vines the same way using rope, I also recently tried out flexible pvc pipe for a branch and it worker well too.
