  • RIP Theia

I hate that I'm having to post this thread right now.

My little baby Crestie, Theia, passed away some time yesterday at only 3 months old.

I found her last night and I was devastated.

I think it was because my Fiance left the bedroom window open and I forgot to close it again before we had to rush out the door for the day. When I came home and went to check on her and then mist her I found her passed...

RIP Theia, in the short time we new each other I loved you dearly. <3

Sorry to hear. It's amazing how important closing a window can be. I'm sorry for your loss.

Aww I'm so sorry for your loss.

When you say he left the window open...do you mean it got too cold for her, or was the sun shining on her enclosure and it got too hot?

I only ask as it would serve as a good reminder for others. I hate that you had to experience it firsthand though.

Thanks guys. It was a very hard lesson to learn.. It got too cold for her as the curtains were mostly closed still, so it wasn't a sun issue.
I feel so bad because Theia's breeder trusted me with one of her babies and I feel like I failed them both.

Accidents and mistakes happen to even the best and most experienced of breeders/keepers. You can't beat yourself up over it, because you genuinely cared for your crestie. This is not a case of neglect, or poor care, or abuse - it was an honest accident. You did your absolute best to give her a good home, and that's what matters. The important thing is that you learned from it. And I hope it doesn't deter you from getting another crestie in the future.

The hardest lesson I had to learn was when my first water dragon passed away after months of vet trips, antibiotics, force-feeding, and constant care. She was sick when I got her, but I didn't know it as I wasn't experienced enough with the species to recognize the signs. By the time I realized, and got her started on treatment, it was a really hard battle. What kills me is the fact that, while she likely would have passed away on her own, I feel responsible for when she died because she was about to throw up her formula, and to try and prevent it (as the vet agreed with) I would put my hand on her face, and she would often be ok. This time, however, she threw up, and I believe aspirated on it, and that's what killed her. I felt so guilty, and so horrible that it was all my fault. It was such a loss after putting so much time and effort trying to get her well.

What came from this lesson is that I'm much more experienced with my current water dragon. I'm constantly researching husbandry and care requirements, much more diligent in checking on all my reptiles and noting changes in behavior, appetite, etc., constantly checking temps/humidity, and spend a lot of time on forums learning about all of my reptiles. While the lesson was hard, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, it has made me a much better keeper as a result.

            RIP Theia.

Thanks so much Cassi. I will get another Crestie in the future but not for a while. I don't want to feel like I'm replacing her.
