  • Tragedy In The Gecko Room

I left on the 24th for the holidays at my Mom's house. Every two to three days, I drove home to feed, mist, and water the geckos, feed the the snakes (on Sundays), and feed, water, and scoop poop for the cats. The dogs went to Mom's with us.

My last visit before coming home for good was on Friday.

Everything was going fine until I got home yesterday.

I've lost about 13 geckos-not sure-didn't count. I was too busy crying. They're in the freezer right now until the ground thaws enough to bury them under my white rose bush.

No clue as to why, but I'm now without my 2 favorite breeder girls and my favorite breeder boy, plus my female golden gecko pair, and a mess of sub-adults. All I can think of is that the heat went too low in the house, but all the reptiles were in the same room, and the rest are fine.

Everyone's been eating, drinking, and pooping up a storm.

The corn snakes are fine. If it got too cold, they would be the first to die.

My year has been a train wreck as it is, with my Mom frying my camera on top of her microwave, all my eggs but one molding or drying out, and now this. And the one baby that DID hatch, and was a preemie, had finally gotten to normal hatchling size, and she died, too.

I spend about three hours just sobbing and trying to figure out what went wrong...and haven't figured anything out...but almost a third of my geckos are dead. No dehydration, no bloating, not a mark on their bodies...just DEAD.

And now three of my breeders are gone. I don't know how much more of this I can take.

Highest temp was 75 and lowest was 70-in the center of the room.

The dead were scattered among the various levels of bins and shoe boxes. Again-no rhyme or reason. Some from the top died, some from the bottom and some from the middle.

We go stack-by-stack to feed, water, and mist, and I keep a pan of water on the floor near the space heater in the winter to help with humidity.

The odd thing is there's no rhyme or reason to the deaths. The snakes and the goldies were located closest to the the space heater, due to their higher heat requirements, and the cresties were around the edge of the room. Everyone was alive and well on Friday afternoon. When I got home Sunday morning, they were gone. No shriveling, no bloating, no marks...just dead.

I was getting ready to E-Fix and N-Fix in the next few weeks, then give everyone a rest before breeding in late March.

Now I either have to find more breeders or wait till some of them reach proper weight.

This year's going to be almost as bad as last year.

At least I have an incubator to cool the eggs, and I'm getting AC for the summer.

Other than that, I don't know what else to do.

I'm just so shocked and saddened. My beautiful Olivia is gone, and she made the most amazing lavender babies with Kokopelli and Dali. Pat the Gimp is gone-after he went through so much in losing his paw. Lambada is gone. She wasn't ever going to be bred, but she was such a sweet little girl, and loved to be played with!!

None of them were what I'd call frail. Even tiny preemie Aleph had made the turn to healthy, fat, and sassy, from the tiny baby that was about 2/3s the size of a normal hatchling. She was only about the length of my pinky when she was born.

Katey cleaned the tanks out, so I'm not even sure who else is gone, or the final death toll.

    Rest In Peace, my babies!!
I'm so sorry things went bad while I was gone!!
I'll miss you more than you'll ever know.
Wait for me at The Bridge...
    Love and Light-
    Donna

      Thank you so much, hon.

I woke up this morning hoping it was all a bad dream...it wasn't.

My poor babies...I wish I knew what happened.

It's not like I haven't had geckos here over the winter. If anything, I stepped up my care because of the cold snap we had earlier last week, but everything was within normal temps & humidity in the gecko room.

I know one thing...no more week-long stays in extreme temps, even with care checks every other day.

Thank you, hon! Trying to hash it all out in my mind.

I checked the furnace, space heater, the hygrometer/temp gauge...the water pan, which I topped off every two days. There are no drafts in the room...I sealed off the edges of the window with clay caulk and I double-checked with a candle before the geckos went into the room.

Everyone's been eating, drinking, & pooping, nobody was gravid (which wouldn't effect the males).

They haven't had any insects in about 6 weeks, since I wanted to do the medicated diets in a week or so, and didn't want them avoiding it.

They get only Repashy CGD, occasional crickets, or wax worms, and they're housed on paper towel.

Nothing toxic is stored in the room or used in the room. I use only Chlorhexidine to clean the tanks, and clean the dishes with dish soap, but soak them 24 hours in plain water before they're dried and put up for the next feeding (I have more than enough food/water dishes for everyone to have multiples).

I even checked with the neighbors to see if we had any kind of power failure in the neighborhood with the high winds and ice.

                Nada.

The space heater and furnace are all working fine.

I almost wish one had malfunctioned.

At least I'd know what happened.

She didn't tell me until I was half asleep, but Katey put Pat and Olivia in the fridge in case I wanted necropsy, and she collected the latest poops for fecals.

I just found them when I went in to get breakfast.

Looks like I'm taking then to the vet this afternoon.
