  • RIP, baby albino Fatlet

OK, I am super bummed out but I honestly probably knew better. At the Expo, I picked up a very small albino african fat tail, my guess was, it was between 2-4 weeks old.
Having had experience with incubating and hatching and raising my own fat tail hatchlings last year, I figured no biggie, I know the husbandry of this species well enough! The little guy ate for me the first night or two, then over the last few days, I've noticed it dropping weight. Today, the little guys passed.
Well, the vendor in question had gotten these from someone else, reportedly some breeder in Florida. The vendor couldn't tell me hatch dates or even who he had gotten the fat tails from. There was a misunderstnading with payment and all sorts of mis-communication which did eventually get resolved, though I was happy to give hte fat tial back to the vendor at that point and walk away with my money.
Well, now the gecko is dead. Needless to say, I will NOT be dealing with getting a small juvie/hatchling from a middleman type vendor EVER again.
I am posting this so that hopefully others can learn from my mistake. I let my heart rule my head, I'm out a bunch of money and with a dead gecko. Folks, please be very careful of who you deal with and get your animals from. If a person can't answer clearly where something came from, buy it with trepidation, if at all. If it feels even a little wrong, just walk away. (unless you're one of those foilks who needs to learn first hand! )
Its always a crapshoot, dealing with things like this...I'm not even necessarily blaming the vendor, they probably had no idea that something was wrong with the animals in question.
But really, I am finding that it is far better in the long run to buy from actual breeders who can give you hatch dates, lineage, etc. than from a middleman who can't tell you anything about where the critters may have come from.
(bear in mind, some "middlemen" ARE careful and responsible and can tell you what you need to know!!! I am not talking about these kinds of people here!)
Little Pink Fatlet, I'm sorry you had to suffer and that i couldn't keep you thriving.

Oh Saille, I'm so sorry.. :C The vendor was a piece of dung as far as middlemen go, and it's terrible that the animals are the ones to suffer. This little fatlet had a better chance with you than with anyone that walked into the doors of that expo, and it just wasn't meant to be. Keep your chin up, and know that you did the best that you could for it, and that's all anyone could ask for. *hug*

THanks, everyone. I am gonna contact the vendor and see if I can get a refund. I'm not holding my breath, but in that case, perhaps the BOI would be a good place to take this.
