  • 3 special friends. . . .

Daisy (white), Bijou(long hair brown), and Jelly Bean(tan and fawn), very special pet mice, have died in the last three days. The first, Daisy was on her way, getting old had OCD and was skinny. Yesterday afternoon, the other two mice had eaten her alive, for in the wild it would keep the scent from predators... This has happened only 1 other time with an older mouse Bonny. Today morning, Bijou was found dead, still intact. She must have gotten sick from eating Daisy. Bean seemed pretty shaken, so I did a thorough cleaning of the tank. 4 hours later Bean died. She was my newest given to my by my science teacher as a present, only 7 months old or so. Daisy was 10 months, and Bijou was her twin. I have no idea why all this sudden death happened so quickly. I almost cried, they were very special to me. The two remaining mice are 2 males Pudge and Pork Chop. This is difficult for me to understand why they would just eat her and die... I miss them both.

It is probably too late to get a necropsy done now, (best to refrigerate teh bodies in a ziplock baggie until you can get them to a vet and the sooner, the better!) but my guess would be that some disease or pathogen caused it all to happen in a domino effect. Sorry for your loss though, RIP little mice.

I'm sorry about your loss, I had a similar situation once, well actually it was the same thing, I had 2 mice, one ate the other and them died the next day, I asked my sister (who has been in college for 3 years to be a vet) and she told me it had to be some type of disease or virus that one got from eating the other

thank you all. I just dont want it to spread to the boys or my rats... I asked my vet/ bio teacher she said it might have been a bacteria cause it spread so fast...

It's not likely that whatever it is will spread to your rats. I'd keep a close eye on everyone for a while though, best of luck with the rest of your babies.
