  • New Gecko Mama

    Hello everyone....

I'm a new gecko mommy of 5. Over the past 2 weeks I've become the proud mommy of 3 House Geckos and 2 Crested Geckos. I will post pictures once I get some. The House ones aren't easy, as they're quick, like to hide AND tend to bite. One escaped and is MIA in my house, somewhere. I knew the spider population has gone down since he found his "freedom". My son and I have named then Geico Gecko, Johnny Gecko (he's MIA) and the confirmed female, Daisy Gecko.

The Crested Geckos I got more recently. My son wanted something he could hold and not be afreiad of being bitten (each House has bitten me at least once). I was going to get a couple of Leopard Geckos, but a very nice gentleman at Petco talked me into a Crested Gecko. He's 8-12 months old. As soon as he was taken out of his "home" I fell in love. He hopped from the man onto me and just sat there looking at me, as if saying "take me home, love me". So, I spent $40 more than I was planning and took him home. I wanted to get him a buddy and from all my reading, a female would be best. Not because I was thinking reproducing, but for companionship and not fighting. Well, finding a full grown female was not easy and I was getting discouraged. Kept going back in to Petco every other day to check. Well, last night I went in, saw 1 and they guy confirmed it's a female. She was hiding. I was soooooo happy. She's beautiful, a little bigger in size than my boy and just as friendly. Learned she's pregnant......shall be interesting.

My son was happy too and held her. I introduced, or should I say, reintroduced, the 2, on my arm, where they proceeded to climb on each other and up to my shoulder and hung out.

Now, the hard part......What do I name them? Was thinking Ozzie and Harriett, but not sure. Any ideas?

Also....when she lays her eggs, how do I know and where do I look?

if you have a plant they will be laid in the plant. but it is best to put out a nice nest box with a privacy cover. i put Peat moss in mine. as for names that is really a personal thing. i have to pick names for the two that are coming tomorrow, so i can't help you.
ANYTHING SAID HERE BY ME IS JUST MY OPINION, PLEASE DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY.

What would make a good nest box? I have one of those "trunk" looking things w/ moss in it, but they won't go in it, unless I have it reasting against the wall.

Congrats on your two cresteds! I think you and your son will really enjoy them.

The easiest lay box is a disposable Gladware container with a hole cut in the lid. (If you want something a little more attractive, put in a box with no lid and place some cork bark over part of the laying substrate..... They often lay eggs under the cork and it will look a bit better.

Keep an eye on your girl. When she lays she should get skinnier in the lower abdomen, and you will probably also see her digging.

Welcome to the forums, Tracy. There are tons of threads available for researching, so sit back with a nice cold Lemonade (my personal beverage of choice) and have fun reading!
