  • Meet Bean!

So I recently purchased a 2" tarantula sling. She's a Salmon Pink bird eater (Lasiodora Parahybana) they are one of the fastest growing tarantula species usually taking only 3-4 years to reach full size which is a 10-12" leg span. They are super mellow and rarely bite or even flick hairs.
I got a possible girl and Named her bean. She's being kept in a 2.5 gallon tank with a heat mat under one side. She's settling in awesomely.
    Here's her setup

I have one of these, but mine is absolutely psycho. I do sometimes get to play the 'how many crickets can you even hold in your fangs?' game now since she's getting some size (though typically, she gets larger fare like dubia).

Just one thing - heat mats can be problematic. Are you getting below 65F? If not, I'd probably remove it.

Really pretty colors. How long do they live?

Niffarious - nice! Mine is really mellow and I'm really shakey so when I do handle she's really calm which I'm happy about.

I have the heat mat under that right side and here's no way for her to dig under the decor, I only have it set at 80 to give her a little warm spot if she'd like, ambient temp is 72 at night and 74-76 during the day. The mat is tiny too so it only covers like 4" on the right.

TAD - right? I live how vibrant her pinks are. If you've got a proper setup and are feeding well then up to 25 years, but bad husbandry can result in them dying in as little as 3-5 years.

I have some other T's that are better for handling. I wish my LP was better, since she's an impressive animal...but man she's nuts. She's also broken her fangs off more than once trying to escape.

Heat mat sounds great then! The biggest issue is that when these guys try to escape heat....they did down! So if there's a heat mat, it can be pretty bad for them. But that sounds just right.

Also, not just bad husbandry will kill them early. So will being male! Just had an adult A. versicolor pass before I could find a mate for him....it's really too bad their lives are so short.

Nice! And wow, never heard of such an fiesty LP! And yeah that's why I made sure she couldn't dig under the decor over the mat just so she'd stay safe.
That's very true! I used to Sheva rose hair that died pretty young, never got it sexed and it's husbandry was fine so I assumed male. This girl was sexed by an professional that works at the store, so I really hope she is for sure a girl lol.

Just fyi, the only way they can sex it 100% is with a molt. If they just looked at the spider and said female, they are not being honest or are misinformed.
Yeah my LP is a bit deranged. That's OK...she's a character at least, and an amazing display animal. She's always out!

And yeah, it could be the rose hair was male or just very old. Most specimens are WC, so knowing their age is fairly impossible if already full size.
