  • Giant Day Geckos(need answers ASAP plz?)

Hey again, sorry for posting so frequently!! But I just came across an ad on kijijI for 2 baby Giant day geckos for a mere 50$ each! And I'm thinking I might get one sometime if they're still available. My question is, are meal worms OK to feed to them? I know they like to have their powder smoothie but they need bugs and I can not stand crickets and they terrify me, are meal worms OK??? I can't have roaches as they're illegal here unfortunately. Also...housing for a baby, would a 20some qt tub work for a hatchling for a little bit? I'm pounding down all the research I can on these guys so I get everything right, any help is apreciated, thanks!!!!!

I've heard that mealworms aren't as good for day geckos but haven't really done much research myself. I'd look over the links that Jess linked see what they say. I do know that one of the huge requirements for day geckos is the need of lighting. Since they're diurnal geckos they require special lighting to thrive, which can get expensive. I'd just be sure to do lots of research before you purchase and make sure you've got an adequate enclosure set up.

Thanks Jess and Kelly! I did like a month of non stop research not too long ago, I do have a good spot for one to be setup as a grow out tank before I put it in its permanent adult home (30x30x15(LxHxW)for growout)I'll read all those websites Jess linked. Thanks again guys

There's another forum that has Phelsuma keepers that are active almost daily, you can go over there and ask questions about lighting and such.

Hey again! So u just wanted to update, Watermelon is about a month old and only 1.7 grams which I assume is underweight, I got it to eat one wak worm which I'm happy about but refuses fresh mashed fruit and CGD (only offered once for nutrients) I dabbed a bit of over ripe mashed raspberry on watermelons nose but it just shook it's head and wiped it off which I find very odd, I'm going to buy some 2 week old crickets as waxwroms aren't very active so I'm hoping that my little one decides to eat some dusted crix. The suspected MBD hasn't gotten worse (the wax worm it ate was dusted) which is good

I'll try to put a link to a video of the little guy, for some reason he will just flip on his back for no reason then a second or 2 later just be completely normal again which worries me
Here's a crappy cell pic but it just happened again while I was offering a wax worm a couple min ago

A healthy day gecko will chow down on Pangea with gusto. What is your set up like? The flipping upside down is definitely concerning.

Do you have a vet in your area? I would take it in for a good through health check.

Could be lack of calcium or neurological.

I'm assuming lack if calcium, I have a full spectrum light on its setup right now which should be helijgn as well as adding extra calcium to its food so hopefully my little guy can recover quick!

You can make a calcium paste, just mix some calcium and water until it makes a thick paste and put a dab on the snout. I've read that the Zoo Med Reptisun 5.0 bulbs are good for day geckos.

I'll try calcium paste this weekend, I hope he actually lucks it off because last time I dabbed food on his nose and he just shook his head and rubbed it off on the ground but I'll definitely try
