  • Trodgar - Desert Horned Toad Lizard

We've had this guy for over two years now. We wild caught him as a hatchling/juvy. He was no bigger than a quarter when we found him. Today he is a little bigger than a silver dollar. Fed only meal worms (we have our own colony of them).

Been wanting to introduce this guy for awhile but not had the time to get pics of him. He is super spoiled. His kingdom is a 2ft x 2ft area (pics to come).

I have a few of those myself! Great little lizards! Mine are platyrhinos. After hearing many success stories about taking them off of ants, mine have been on roaches and butterworms for nearly a year. They are super healthy, and I've recently noticed mating.

I put like 5 very small roaches in his enclosure last night. Didn't see them this morning. He does go crazy for crickets when we throw a few in there. He even chases them down..... Something I thought these guys didn't do~

Yeah, I've heard that, too (no chasing). But mine will definitely chase crickets. I put the roaches in a dish to keep them from heading straight under the sand. Seems there are a lot of misconceptions about these guys, I'm guessing due to poor husbandry.

They are very cool but as Noelle stated, seems to be a lot of misinformation on keeping this species. I have heard varied results keeping them, mostly ending up in death. Im glad we were able to provide for this one. Given what we know I'd think twice though. The first 3-6 months I worried about this one terribly and whether or not we were providing the correct needs for it......

He is awesome, I have always loved the horned lizards and to hear that you can get them to eat something else besides ants has got me reconsidering getting one. Have you ever seen him squirting blood from the corner of his eyes?

We try not to stress him out. So no, never seen squirting blood. I seen a video on these guys that said its a reaction they have to mainly k-9's. Don't know the validity of this~

Most of the commonly kept Phrynosoma cannot squirt blood. Mine can't. The cornutum, solare, and coronatum are the ones that I'm aware of that have this ability.
The biggest obstacle I've overcome is providing proper basking temps. These guys need 75 to 105, and everything in between. I house them outdoors with my desert torts in the summer, and I find them basking on rocks that are way too hot to touch. I've dug small burrows to allow them to access temps that are cooler than the surface. Also, they do not handle stress well. They freeze when you pick them up.

                        It's a process!

I believe the one we keep will squirt but we've had him since he was literally a baby. I don't think he would squirt either us TBH. He totally doesn't like me however and loves my GF to death. I can only handle him after she places him in my hands. Otherwise he hisses and jumps and does all kinds of crazy moves to get away from me. She just picks him up and he let's her lol funny creatures!
