  • New Semiaquatic Build

So over the past few months I've been researching, designing, failing and starting over with a new ( at least i can't find anything like it) tank design.

To make it simple, it's a planted island box in the middle of a 55 gal "pond"

I've made 2 proto-types up to this point and so far I've found things that worked and many, many, many things that didn't.

So in the next phase i need to find some living moss as a part of the land structure but as of yet i haven't been able to locate any in a greenhouse/nursery, i live in a city so foraging isn't much of an option, pet stores offer "frog moss" but as far as i can tell it never truly comes back to live or takes root, and i'm looking for a product that does both.

If anyone knows of a place, source, or at least place to do some good research i would love it.

I have utilized most of the obvious sources up to this point but i'm still shooting zero.

Here's some pictures of the build so far, the sealing of the tank is going slowly but work is going well.

I'll post a few more pictures once i get a little further along.

Nifty! Did you ever find the moss you were looking for? I use java moss in all my semi-aquatics since it'll grow up out of the water onto whatever structure is there. I bought mine off of eBay.

I have tons of java, I use it in all my tanks. My baby cherry shrimp love it. But for this application I'm going with a pillow moss I think.

Quick question, do you guys think if I seal the rock wall with polyurethane it will be ok fully submerged?

What is it made of other than rock? And if you do use polyurethane make sure it isn't the kind that discolors with uv light. There's some epoxy that has the same problem too.

The backer board is made of a vinyl board and the rocks are "glued" to it with aquarium silicon. I need something liquid like to coat it with so it's more of a solid structure so my toads don't rip them off. Also I want to fill the gaps in a bit better.

Recommend? All my knowledge is second hand, I don't know what brands my viv builder used. I have a massive 4x4x3' tank he gave me and the background is black epoxy covered foam. It is a running water wall so it's withstood sone serious water abuse and held up great. If I get a chance to see him and show him your pictures I can pick his brain but he works the evening shift for me. The soonest I'll see him is Monday night.
