    Default Alien INVASION!!

Hahaha... my Chinese Mantids from the hardware/garden center, hatched all over my kitchen today! I had a small Ficus sitting on the kitchen table, so I put the 2 ooths in the little branches.... and kind of forgot about them. Today, my husband said "hey, what's that crawling on the kitchen table?" Sure enough, about 50 little "alien" kids were wandering around my other violets and such on the table, the ceiling, the chairs and curtains, floor... everywhere. I think I've rounded most of them up... Aneesa will find the rest, if she can see 'em.

I put the whole Ficus in a screened enclosure.. babies still popping out of the one ooth and I suppose the other ooth will be hatching out pretty soon (if it's not a dud).

And I'll have to borrow the neighbor's camera again, if you wanna see pics. If anyone may be interested in a few of them... for your garden pest control or just for pets... pm me. I'm feeding them "ff's*" already, so there should be a few survivors.

Very cool. Although I'm not sure that is a site I'd like to encounter!

    Thanks!!

Christa, you can have as many as you like! Of course, providing I can successfully raise them up. How are your mantids doing, btw?

I'm looking for "house flies" now.. Musca domestica... a "clean" online source for them (not caught from outside, please). Any ideas? I found SpiderPharm online, so far.

I wouldn't mind a few either. I'll see if I can find a fruit fly place for you.

    Okay.

I'm not looking for fruit flies, though. I would like to try some "house flies", or Musca domestica, when they are big enough. Of course, my tree frog and Tokay... maybe the Cresteds... will enjoy them, too.

    Thanks!

Have you thought about fruit flies? they seem to be easier to get ahold of.

I am feeding fruit flies now, actually. I'm just preparing for future feedings when they are substantially larger and need larger prey items. I've read that a lot of mantid hobbyists prefer house flies to crickets, etc.

I think I'll go with the SpiderPharm folks and see how they are. One person said they've dealt with them on the mantidforum.com, so I'll try 'em out.

    Thanks!
