Default Smokey smell on new branches

    Hello,

Today I bought a couple branches from a vendor at the Hudson valley reptile show when I got them home I realized they had a really smokey smell to them, like the same smell you get on your clothes after being around a bon fire for a couple hours, I have no clue whether the person smoked them to disinfect them (if that even works) and I am very hesitant to put something in with my geckos that has that strong of a a smell. I would like to see if anyone on here has any ideas of whether this could be harmful or not and if smoking wood would disinfect it. Thanks in advance.

I don't know about disinfecting them but smoking them to keep dry them seems more likely. Maybe they bake them and some get that smokey smell. I would put them in a 10% bleach solution, rinse and let it air dry if the smell bothers you too much.

I would go with baking them, then the bleach solution as well. Letting them air out for a few days after as well should help. Also baking and the bleach means that they are clean for your geckos
