    Default Springtails?

Putting whole colonies of bugs in my tank scare me... would these guys take over? Hurt my gecko? Give off toxins? Is there a certain number of plants I'd need to have?

I don't know about springtails needing plants, but they really do well with a leaf litter spread over whatever substrate you're using. They use it as a food source and cover.

Not sure if you'd want to stick the entire culture in there, if you have more than one take, spread it out. I'm thinking more of the available food for them than anything else. They will help clean up mold, droppings, dead plant matter etc. They will not harm your animal, but can get annoying as they will turn up in cgd if the food bowl is on the ground. you can stick a small piece of carrot or some rice into the earth occasionally if you are concerned about the springtails not having much to eat. They usually find their way into planted tanks whether you wanted them or not. Good bugs.

    Springtails love mushrooms, too.
