Yeah, I would argue that a new tank is less likely to contain parasites or bacteria than a previously used tank as well. To be on the safe side, the cleaning should be the same though.

As for cost of pick up, it's statistically more likely that a Petco is near you than a person off of craigslist or in a city ad. Therefore, the cost of gas should be less. The cost of gas to the nearest Petco is also most likely less than the cost of packing and shipping a heavy tank, especially a large glass one.

If you live in a rural area or a place with no Petcos, then of course it's different story and you may have no choice but to order online. If you are around a Petco though, it's a really hard deal to pass up if you need a new tank.
