    Default Tortoise?

Hey guys, I have a question about a tortoise.

I had a friend when I was little who had this big ass tortoise that walked around his house and slept in the closest. I always thought it was pretty cool.

I started looking into them today and haven't been able to find anything. The closest thing I could find were Russian Tortoises that are kept in 50 Gallon tanks.

WHAT DID MY CHILDHOOD FRIEND OWN?
    Its driving me crazy.

Sulcata or Leopard tortoise is my guess.

Also could be a Greek if you think it looks like a Russian tort. Any of the other Testudo genus could fit as well. Maybe a Hermann's?

Keep in mind lots of people have only in the last few years realized the mistakes that were made in husbandry when it comes to many herps, though torts and turtles seem to have some of the worst history with care. If your friend fed it a high protein diet (which was common) its growth may have been bigger than your average healthy version of the sp. Also keep in mind how big you were as a kid vs. your size now. I sometimes look at herps I had contact with when I was younger and think 'wow I remember this animal being bigger and way more impressive'.

Haha! So true - I thought some pretty crazy stuff.
Im sorry to be reeeeally lazy here and not look into them myself but those tortoises you just named, are those the types that walk around the house and eat out of a bowl and are litter trained?
    Haha, sounds outrageous describing it.

ALSO, since I was a kid a tonne of animal care knowledge has changed. Does this stuff still happen? Or did we find out that keeping tortoises like dogs is a no no?

Yeah it still happens but its frowned upon... No tortoise should walk around in a house or be housed in a tank. Its doable, but hey, you can't control how people practice bad husbandry. There's a ton of new information on how these wonderful animals should be cared for. If you plan to purchase one, I highly advise you to look ahead and research, as most of these torts require different diets, temps, substrate, humidity etc. :]

When I was a kid everybody here in southern California had huge gopher tortoises. I mean EVERYBODY had one free-roaming their backyard. I remember my grandma buying me one at Sears with an orange painted shell. They're illegal to keep now. If it was fairly large, that would be my guess.

Gopher and Desert Tortoises were both common in the reptile hobby in the until F&W began to actually look at their populations. Both were provided (well deserved) protections in the late '80s.

Perhaps this is what he had?
