Default Eco Earth and Hydroballs - necessary?

    Question...

I am getting my first crested gecko next week and am preparing ahead. Is it absolutely necessary to have a drainage layer in a terrarium where I will be using eco earth as the substrate? I have seen posts where some people do and some people do not have a drainage layer.

Also, I have some wood and the eco earth to put in the terrarium. What homemade solution should I use to clean them? I know how I should bake them after.

    Thanks!

Drainage lay is only necessary in tanks with plants that require a good amount of drainage or if you plan on making the tanks 100% bio active. The lair is needed for the beneficial bacteria in that case. If you plan on changing out the soil from time to time you don't really need it (though it helps). I also don't suggest a drainage layer if you plan on housing an adult female in the tank. She will most like just try and dig into it.
