    Default Show me your Bettas!

LOL, seeing NintendoVixens' thread about Bettas made me want to make a thread about it! So everyone whip out pictures of your finned friends!! I'll start, I only have one female as of now, I have a tendancy to go into stores and find the most pittiful Bettas, rescue them and then rehab them and give them to loving homes, I think i have an obbsesion with them.. If i can figure out why photobucket wont work on my computer i'll post a picture of her, but for now lets see yours!

I'll share some of the betta splendens I've had over the years, since I kept them for a long time. I only have Betta Fusca currently. They look like all the other B. Fusca out there, google them.

Here's some of the Splendens I've had though.

Rescued this guy from an innept local breeder that thought males could just live together forever as long as they were raised that way. He had NO FINs when I picked him up. They were chewed down to his body, he was so badly injured, and so ill, he didn't eat for a month after I got him and barely survived. This was him a year later.

A black marble DT I had. He was a favorite, and these photos document the change he overwent as I had him.

    B. Smaragdina I kept for a while.

Girl I bred, out a a RT spawn.

Girl I bred, out of a CT spawn.

    A favorite male.

    Another favorite.

DTPK, from a friend on another forum. I loved this guy so much, he was so cute. D:

This guy I also bred myself. Father was that black lace PK.

    A sister of his.

And this was my last guy that just passed away. Typhoon.

Oh, now you've done it. :P I have to say, Styx, my favorites are your marbled bettas. Everyone's are gorgeous, as all bettas tend to be.

I've got twelve bettas currently, although not all of them are pictured..

Shoshein, my four year old betta boy.

    Shokara.. isn't he shiny? 8D

    Anji, a rescue betta.

    Howell "Howl" Jenkins.

    Spirit, my only crowntail.

    Tokio.

Sigma, technically a friend's and not mine.

    Kyuubi, one of two females..

Cricket, my mom's betta that I technically take care of.

Unpictured are: Shora, Blue, and Talas. And about 30 other fish that are not bettas..

Ok! Here is the Double-Tail male I got at the fish auction! None of them have names yet. He wouldn't sit still for a nice pic though.... kept bending and turning and looks crroked in the pics lol :-p

Here is the female I got for him.

I got another female too but didn't get any clear pics of her. She is a cream color with red fins. She is not in the tank with the other two anymore because she was being a bully :-/
The 2 reds are getting along great! In this pic you can see the other female before I removed her. She's the one closer to front.

Are you keeping the male and female together? Thats a big no-no. They might get along now, but she will eventually grow up (she's still very young judging from her photos) and will absolutely shred your males fins. The only male I ever lost to breeding was a blue halfmoon doubletail similar to yours. They have so much finnage they literally cannot get away from an aggressive female.

Also, if they do breed in that tank, you're going to lose all the babies in the rocks and it will be practically impossible to keep the water clean without sucking up all the babies.

    Thanks Sam.

Ihukura, marbles are my fave. :3 DTPK marble = <3

    NintendoVixen79, very nice!

& agreed with Misskiwi67. Bare bottom tanks are the easiest to clean and maintain when it comes to such tiny fry.

    Ahhh :-D
I definitely have a lot to learn!
I am used to fish needing to be together to breed... My boyfriend has a couple of fish he hobby breeds that are kept together. I would not know how fish could breed if not kept together...? Unless you put them together a short time or something?
Also I assumed that since female Bettas are social/community fish that they wouldn't be a threat to the male. And I thought that, although males need to be kept alone, that they would be ok with a female...
but now I am confusing myself more :-p

I will also take the rocks away...

Leave the rocks... use it as a community tank. It looks lovely.

Bettas are not like any other fish. Even during normal breeding, bettas will absolutely SHRED one another. They aren't called Siamese fighting fish for nothing!!!!

Bettas should only be introduced when they are ready to breed. The female should be a similar size to the male, or slightly smaller. Both bettas should be fed a high quality mixture of live and frozen foods for a MINIMUM of two weeks prior to breeding. Breeding is a lot of work, and the male will care for the babies for 3-4 days after breeding and its a LOT of work... especially with all those fins to drag around. The health of both fish needs to be top notch prior to even thinking about breeding.

The tank water for breeding needs to be shallow to decrease the work for the male in caring for the babies, a specific temperature, and the female and male need to be carefully introduced so they don't kill each other. If they aren't "ready" they WILL kill one another in the confines of a small aquarium.

Do your research. You have a lovely pair there, droolworthy even for my cultured tastes, and I'd hate to see you fail from lack of preparation. In fact, I hope you succeed because I want to be on the list for babies from that pair!!!

Here is the website I used when I began breeding. Excellent and ACCURATE information. I used her techniques with much success back in the day. If she's still breeding, I also recommend her stock... lovely fish, I purchased several from her way back when.
