    Default Info on crabs?

I was wondering if anyone knew of some good sites with information on keeping crabs, my boy saw some cool looking ones at the reptile store the other day when he went in to get crickets and we were thinking about getting them but wanted to do a bit of research on them first.

Not sure what kind they were but he said they were fairly large and blueish. We have an extra tank kicking around so I'm not opposed to him getting them, I just want to know how to take care of them first. I'll get him to see exactly what kind they are when he goes in tomorrow.

    I'm assuming they weren't Hermits?

Check out the invertebrate sites ..and some of the better fish related sites will have some geeks that are good on fresh/brackish/marine inverts, as well.

Arachnoboards comes to mind ..and Flippers 'n Fins on yuku (formerly ezboard) ..try www.aquaria.info also (they are friendlier and less quick to jump on a noob than FnF)

    Good Luck!

Some really cool ones that are commonly available in herp stores or at shows are moon crabs. They, like all crabs, require both salt and fresh water to keep their lungs from over-drying. I'd probably throw in about 6-8 inches of sand, with a topsoil of leaves or cocofiber.

We're still trying to decide on whether we should get fish, crabs or something else, I would really like to have an axolotl but I don't know where to get one!

We have kept the blue moons in a half and half tank. Their main water was kept slightly salty as I couldnt find anywhere that they were brackish, and as they were kept with fiddlers, we had to keep it high enough to keep the fiddlers happy. On the sand (which was 6" deep) land side we offered a fresh water dish deep enough for the crabs to submerge in. We added burrows in it against the glass so if they decided to go under, you could still see them. Although they spent about 90% of the time in the water, they prefers to bask on the rocks peeking out of the water than the "land" itself.
