Well, these are pets, but my pets sure do like them! I tried out breeding crickets. All I did was put 600 + adult crickets in a 20 gallon rubbermaid filled with toilet paper roles, egg cartons, and some other misc. stuff for hiding. I fed them greens and such and put in some containers of moist vermiculite/soil/sand and viola! LOTS of eggs. Well, I took the containers and put them into a ten gallon tank with a BIG heat pad (takes up almost whole bottom of tank) and one of those lids made of plastic (it flips open and you usually have it UNDER the screen lid for snakes, etc.). I misted it real good and the lid kept the humidity up. Well, I checked it today and there's hundreds of itty bitty crickets crawling around! YAY! Here's a pic, if you look close you can see them.

It's a mess in there, but the containers spilled a bit when I put them in there.

BWAHAHAHAHa I looked forever in that first pic before I scrolled to the second. I thought I was getting older than I feel. Congrats on your new pets. Pretty soon we'll see a post of you starting your own cricket distributor. KT's Crix home grown and hand fed crickets-when only the best will do. Wish I could breed them. Crix just stink too much to me. I'll stick with driving to the pet store each week. Speaking of....gotta go!

Wow, Katie... amazing!! I've been thinking of breeding some crickets myself, but I can't get over the smell either. I order about 500-1000 online every couple weeks or so, and some of those seem to do some breeding on their own. I think if I really put some effort into the whole ordeal, they would really put out enough to keep my geckos and other lizards and fish happy... just that darn "funky, pungent" ...blahhhh!! :-&
I may have to stick with the lobsters and dubias :D

lol nice Derek
I gave my hand at breeding crickets. My last attempt gave me lots of babies who all shortly died off. I tried feeding them the cricket grains by flukers and water cubes to no avail.

And here is a video of all the little buggers. I kinda scrape the heat lamp I'm holding for light against the tank, so maybe you should turn down your sound for it as it is all screachy...sorry!
