I think thats because they live their life on Sand.Hense the name Sand boa.So ide sugjest getting some sand in their. It would be alot more likes its natural habitat. And in my opinion it would look better.

they do not need sand as a bedding, shredded aspen is fine. many people i know have bred KSBs on aspen, and they like it better than sand. (the breeders that is, i dont know what goes on in the snakes mind. lol) though i am curious as to why there are wires in the cage.

the wires you see are from the probs for the thermostat to keep the temp constant, as for the sand question from what i have heard they do fine on aspen an the aspen holds the burrows better. the wires are ok to be in there right, i havent read anything about that being a problem.

How very odd for this topic to come up... I have been out of snakes for awhile and have been trying to decide to get a western hog, or try something new with a ksb. Doing some research earlier today on the boas i came across a great site with the following info...

Most species of Eryx either live areas that are only partially sandy. The data from the field suggest that many of them spend significant time hiding in burrows of other animals, rather than burrowed in sand. Therefore, the name "sand" boa is misleading for most of the species. Yes, they will burrow in sand if you give it to them, but so will most kingsnakes!

That quote comes from This page on sandboa care and housing. (http://www.kingsnake.com/sandboa/housing.html)
