I don't know of anywhere online. Hopefully there'll be some at the Atlanta show, since they're out of GA. I hope to find retailers and online vendors whaen I go up there.... if they come to Savannah (Oct 8) I'll find out for you.
BTW, I left some in there and they turned into flies! Put 'em in the gecko cages, and they were gone in the morning.... :D

What are they? I've never heard about them.
It is the larval form of the black soldier fly. Very high in calcium and such from what i've read. It is now hitting the market as a new herpfood item. Originally used by Dr. Sheppard in some of his work. Can't remember much more right now but it'll come to me. Also you will be able to find out more at... www.phoenixworm.com they're working on updating the site.

I am still trying to find what works best for my cresteds and my wallet (considerding both time and money). The price per worm is very attractive. Too bad there are not sold in smaller quantities. I fear that they would mature before they are offered to my gecks. If they are in the Atlanta area, I may see if they could sell a smaller quantity...

Geckoguyatl, you'll probably be able to find them in ATL easier than the rest of the forum members, since they're out of GA. I bought a cup of 100, or 150, (can't remember) and fed them infrequently to my 2 geckos, and they liked them , and then I forgot about the cup for awhile. well, I found out that geckos like to eat the flies too.
I think in those cups you'd be able to feed off all the worms to your geckos without much die-off or metamorphosis, since they last a long time. Just feed the darkest worms first each time.

Geckoguyatl! go to armstrongcricket.com... if you call them directly they will ship smaller quantities to you. i've done it before. They have a minimum of a 12 dollar order which is about 3 containers of worms. if you're worried about them pupating i would get the small or extra small size they'll last you longer. hope this helped.

To geckoguyatl and others: The Phoenix Worm Store www.phoenixworm.com is now open and selling 4-cup orders, postage paid, direct to you from our farm.
Dr. Sheppard here, developer/producer of this new feeder insect. Just found the forum and registered to be able to tell members that our website is finally up and running and to be able to respond to any questions you may have. We have been working with breeders for over 4 years to bring Phoenix Worms to the herp market (and struggling since the Daytona Expo to get national distribution) so we hope you'll visit and give these unique worms a try.

How long does it take these worms to turn into the fly? I mean, how long can I keep them before they begin changing?
Thanks!

Phoenix Worms keep for many weeks when left in their cup with the lid securely closed. Changing to flies has not been a problem. In fact, we have seen worms active in their cup after holding for months (although we do not recommend that).

not to long ago i bought a cup of small size and another of medium... @ a local show.
i fed off the medium and held back the small until that cup was done hoping they'd gain some size when i was ready for them.
They went well over a month unopened except for the occasional watering. With NO Casualties! great first time experience. well worth it!
Great feeding response as well. They move pretty quick, and gets those hungry mouths going!

I just placed my first order, so we'll give them a try as well.
How much do you water the small ones if you are trying to stay 'ahead' with your food stock? I overstock on crix because I don't want to run out, and would like to do the same with the phoenix worms.

Cicada,
Phoenix worms are managed differently than most other feeder insects. They are packed in a nonfood media to maintain a suitable environment in the closed cup. The cup needs to stay closed so the media doesn't dry out. Only water a few drops when the media dries out or the worms dehydrate a little. You'll see them shrink up a little. Basically follow the directions on each cup. They will keep several weeks while maintaining quality if managed as directed. Phoenix worms are available in four sizes and we recommend ordering the size you want. Just order and enjoy this maintainance free feed.
We do not recommend any feeding because of the problems this may cause; small batches are difficult to feed properly and this leads to problems in moisture maintainance, putrification and in the wost case, production of pest flies. moldy food, etc..
Thanks for your order! You will get a brochure with your order with lots of info that should answer other questions.

How do you breed the worms and how quickly do the reproduce.

Derek,
There is much information on the web about the black soldier fly, but this insect in the wild is NOT our trademarked Phoenix Worm. The life cycle is about two months; however, Phoenix Worm rearing methods are proprietary. Insect Science Resource has spent many years and thousands of dollars in developing this feeder insect for the herp, tropical fish, and arachnid markets. Honestly, as a breeder of designer reptiles, I'm sure that you will appreciate the fact that I want to profit from the years of research developing the rearing and handling procedures for the Phoenix Worm.

I understand, but how would someone with quite a few animals afford to feed the worms to their animals ??

Thanks so very much! I can't wait because if they are as easy as you claim, no more crix for me! I'm very excited about them even if just to offer a different insect. Sometimes I wonder if the cresties get tired of eating crix all the time.
So, are you selling Phoenix worms on eBay as well? Someone is offering the worms at a discounted price. I'd link you there, but I can't remember if it's a violation of forum rules.

Does phoenixworm.com ship to Canada? If not, could you recommend a site (if any) that will ship small quanities of them?

Hello Megan,
We received your question at www.phoenixworm.com but thought we'd answer you here where others may benefit. We have not shipped to Canada but are currently in discussion with two potential distributors who are interested in adding Phoenix Worms to their product lines. So we hope you'll be able to find Phoenix Worms in your area soon.

My cresteds liked them too, but I do have a complaint about them. They can climb quite well if ANY water gets in their bowl, which can be a real pain in a natural looking setup and the humdity requirements for cresteds.
