Hello everyone,

I am a new member here, recomended by a friend of mine on another forum (I am a regular on redtailboas.com). I have 4 red tail boas (columbians: 1 normal, 2 pastel, and 1 salmon), a rescue ball python, a bearded dragon, 3 cats, 1 horse, a couple fish and aquatic frogs... and my newest additions are two crested geckos I got at the NARBC show in Aneheim, CA.

I am a full time student. Last year I attended Humboldt State Univ. (in Calif.) and about 4 months ago, I moved to Santa Barbara (central/southern coast). Originally I am from San Jose, CA (south bay area) where I spent 18 years. I have volunteered for the last three years at a small, but incredible zoo there where I have gained more experience than I can express gratitude for. I'm currently trying to get a spot at the SB zoo, but schedule permits now. I also work 20-25 hours a week at a cat boarding facility.

I'm quite savvy with most pet species, but have a lot of questions about my new cresteds, so bear with me.

Here's a picture of me about a year and a half ago at the zoo:

:D Welcome to the forum!! Awesome lemurs..... if I had known there was a zoo in San Jose when I was living in Monterey, I'd have gone! I think you'll like it here. Post some pics of your geckos (and other critters) when you get the chance....

Does your zoo have a very big reptile collection? It must be such a dream working there (or even volunteering would be nice!). :)

First off, my goodness. Thank you everyone! What a nice warm welcome.

Its a very small zoo to begin with. I suppose for the size of the entire collect, a fair percent is reptiles. Luckily, I have had the privledge of worke with all but 2 of the reptiles at the zoo, and one is the large boa, which I have 4 personally. The other being the African Spurred Tortise, who is a good 70ish pounds.

Zoo Display:
1 large, nearly 30 year old boa constrictor (Derek)
1 Florida kingsnake (Hannah)
1 Box turtle (Crystal)
1 African spurred tortise
2 Red eared sliders in the aviary

Education Department:
2 Leopard geckos (Baroda & Kanpur
1 Sonoran kingsnake (Sonora)
1 Prehensiled tailed skink (Munda)
1 California Desert Tortise - endangered (Tortellini)

I believe that's it. We're fairly heavy on ungulates and small carnivores.

Haha, yes. Derek is pretty darned old. I think she (named after Bo Derek... I think...) is around... 28? 20-25 is a good age... They can live 5-10 years longer with great care... Happy Hollow (the zoo in SJ) is well known for their care. Our jaguar recently passed away in February... She was 23 (in the wild they live to be 14-16, in captivity usually 16-19 or 20).
