View Full Version : A very unique hatchling

I had posted this little guy on fauna and had a request to post him here. He hatched about a month and a half ago, eats fine and moves around OK, though he has some deformities, including curled toes and a wavy tail. He's quite possibly a hypo, similar to one Mark Orfus of northerngecko hatched. Though he eats on his own, he's still pretty tiny for being almost two months old, so while I hope he fairs OK, I feel the need to show him to you guys in case he doesn't make it, either.

I'm sorry for the pictures, I'm having a horrible time trying to figure out how to post them so they aren't links?

Oh he's gorgeous! I'll hope for the best! Have you gotten him to take a bug? That will help him put on the grams.

Current pics?

Looks definitely different to my eyes! What are mom and dad?

Thanks so much for sharing these pics over here on Pangea too, and I'm so glad the little guy is still with you!!

The easiest way to get your pics to show up in your post is to host them someplace else like www.photobucket.com and then just link them over.

Sending good karma to the little one...to help him pull through and thrive!!

He's so peach/orange! Love him! I hope his awesome coloration isn't linked to his physical problems. It would be nice to establish a line of geckos with that coloration.

I've offered crickets but he either won't go for them, or can't catch them. I've held off on any assist feeding because I see him eating repashy just fine.

His father is a dark halloween and his mother is a flame so you can imaging my surprise when I saw his head poking out!

Wow. I've not seen such a pale kid since the one that got posted over on Repashy (and if memory serves me right, that one didn't make it). Best of luck with this little one. I am curious to see how it grows up. I hope it thrives!
can you post pics of the parents?
If you upload photos to photobucket, you can post an Img, and it should show up as a pic instead of as links, hope that helps!

Are you keeping the parents paired up? Would be interesting to see if more hatch out, hopefully problem free.

You can almost tell in his pictures it's like he doesn't have any bones in his toes. I think that's what Mark had said about his too, something about foot abnormalities.

Wow. Crested gecko hatchlings definitely do not typically come out of the egg with those colors. Something is different about him, for sure. I seriously hope he gets to grow up and be healthy!

That sucks...the problems could be 'attached' to the gene that causes the colors, similar to the spider ball python head wobble. I hope the colors can be reproduced without the abnormalities.

Katie that is an interesting thought. I hear ALL spider balls have some kind of wobble, but the severity varies. I can only hope I or someone else can produce another with less severe deformities.

Yes, all have some wobble, but most can live perfectly healthy lives in captivity.

I will be watching for updates on this little one, as well as future offspring from the parents. Maybe with selective breeding, you'll be able to rid the future offspring of the abnormalities. Hopefully it will be that simple, and it won't be like the spider bps.

Lol, I think you're going to be receiving hungry demands for lots of updates and pictures of this little guy, and any siblings from the same parents. It's just an idea, but maybe starting a blog would be a good way to keep everyone updated? This is definitely something that should be well documented from the very start, and it might be easier to do in a blog than across multiple forums.

Just an idea. I'm just so excited for you!

Please keep in mind that selling should not be done outside of the Trade section though - so please make sure any advertising for selling other animals is done there only. One post has been removed and I would ask that if you are interested in buying you PM the user directly and keep it out of this thread. Thanks!

Those footies look like they may be very vulnerable to stuck shed. Good luck! Apart from the known abnormalities it looks like you're doing a great job with him/her!

I can't tell if it's the lighting, but is that some dark patterning developing on its back feet? Curious to see if this little guy continues to develop looking like a hypo.

Yes, every time he sheds I have to pull it off his toes. It's not easy though.

On a note about this little one being albino. I was recently talking with Anthony Caponetto about the gecko's that hatch out like this. His theory on it is this. Melanin is one of the last things that develops in the egg. And when a gecko hatches out looking albino or hypo like this, they simply didn't develop melanin in the egg. This would also explain why they hatch out deformed most the time. Though i have seen one that hatched out like this yet grew up normal looking. I even own one from Erica at crown jewel that hatched out this color she says. Who knows for sure but its interesting to think about.

I'm actually surprised at how well he moves around. I will find him at the top of a plastic plant in his cage and am thrilled that he can actually manuver his way up there. To feed him though I put some CGD on a piece of paper towel and change it every night, just in case he has trouble climbing into a bottle cap.

So could any solid red/orange/yellow gecko, or any red/orange harley for that matter....

So could any solid red/orange/yellow gecko, or any red/orange harley for that matter....

Many reds/yellows/oranges seem to have some dark pigment that blocks complete vibrancy. Some texts are in disagreement on whether reptiles produce pheomelanin, but I'm inclined to believe they do, which means there are multiple ways to get a red/orange - increased red pheomelanin from melanophores or increased red drosopterins from xanthrophores. This would in part explain why some vibrant reds don't breed true! (Plus incubation temperatures....)

I guess I should have said "aeumelanistic" but it's really hard to spell and say. :(

Semantically, it's not an albino, because by its nature the word means "white". Makes sense in mammals, when they don't produce/show melanin (either eumelanin and pheomelanin), they are white.

Silveretta
09-21-2011, 09:36 AM
I don't think he is albino, because of his pupils, but possibly hypo. Something about his eyes are different, and this was true with the similar one from northern gecko.
