I had to have my dog Dylan PTS today, he was a 15 year old German Shepherd cross. A more gentle dog you couldn't meet, he was soft as a brush.
I got a call at work today from my mam to say he had collapsed in the house and couldn't get up. I wanted to be with him for his last journey, so I came home from work and we took him to the vets.
For anyone who has to have a pet PTS please stay with them (dont leave them with a vet nurse) its heartbreaking but its the last thing you can do for your pet. It broke my heart to see him go, but I know he had a good life with us. When he was younger he loved to go up the hills with me and chase the rabbits and birds.
I know he will once again run through the fields, with that daft look on his face and tongue hanging out.
Sorry for rambling but even though I only lost him a few hours ago, I wanted to tell people about my wonderful dog.
RIP Dylan I will miss you.

Oh, sweetie-I'm so very sorry for your loss!!
I've been on that same road MANY TIMES over the years...and it's NEVER EASY...even when you know it's the kindest thing you can do for your pet.
It was good that you were with Dylan. He loves and trusts you to do the very best for him, and I'm sure he feels much better now.
Just remember-LOVE NEVER ENDS just because one of the beings has left the room.
This is the poem we picked for my Grandpa's funeral card, and I think it's so appropriate.
Togetherness
Death is nothing at all.
I have only slipped away into the next room.
Whatever we were to each other,
We still are.
Call me by my old familiar name.
Speak to me in the same easy way you always have.
Laugh as we always laughed at the
little jokes we enjoyed together.
Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.
Life means all that it ever meant.
It is the same as it always was.
There is absolute unbroken unity, and continuity.
Why should I be out of your mind because
I am out of your sight?
I am but waiting for you,
For an interval,
Somewhere very near,
Just around the corner.
All is well.
Nothing is past.
Nothing has been lost.
One brief moment,
And all will be as it was before-
Only better.
Infinitely better,
Infinitely happier:
We will be one, together forever.
Here's another one for you-but you already know it-even if you've never seen it in print, you know it in your heart and soul-
A Pet's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the worlds sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to the elements.
And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the
hearth.
Though, had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my God and I am your devoted worshipper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.
Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or my sight, do not turn me away from you.
Rather, hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest --- and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

*hugs* I am so sorry for your loss. I very much agree about staying with them during their final moments. My beloved cat was PTS while I hugged him in my arms. As heartbreaking and sad as it is, the last moment should be spent together if possible.
You will be with your doggy again someday :-) He had a wonderful 15 years on Earth with you.

sorry to hear about your loss, sending support your way
RIP Dylan, It sounds like he had a wonderful life with you. Even though being with a pet while its being put to sleep is hard, in the end it is the best thing you can possibly do. When my Akita Bear was 14 he hit it hard and had to be PTS and my parents did everything possible to keep me out of the room, but he was my dog i wouldnt let them, annd to this day I'm glad I did. So sorry about your loss :(

I had not heard this before, but it was so appropriate.
I broke down while reading it, it is a beautiful pets prayer. Thank you for showing it to me. And as you said
Here's another one for you-but you already know it-even if you've never seen it in print, you know it in your heart and soul
That is so true, Dylan will be forever in my heart, Thank You.

Thank you so much for your kind reply, and I am so glad I chose to stay with him at the end, and watch him gently slip away.
