This question if for the breeders....

What is a general weight when a female crestie is gravid? Nermal is about 36 grams which is proper breeding weight but she looks plump. I'm not sure how to tell if she is gravid so any help would be appreciated. The first night i got her, I caught her diggin in the laying box but have been checking for eggs with no success. Also should the lay box be kept quite moist so the peat is always dark or just darkish and still kind of powdery?

It really depends. In my cage with my 1.2, the male and one female are 40 grams. The other female is around 50-52 grams. These are all weights while not gravid, so I would be hard to give you a straight answer.

You want the laying medium to be moist to the touch, to powdery and it will suck your eggs dry and leave them dented and dead. You don't want it to have standing water either though or to be too muddy. Just stir it up till the mixture is dark and not powdery. Breeding female when not gravid can weigh as little as 30 grams allthough 35 is a good weight to breed at it is not a rule.

after about a week and a half to two after a succesful breeding you can carefully roll your finger upwards(from tail) and you can feel the eggs.BE CAREFUL not to push too hard!!! you can also see the eggs if you look carefully

this does work, but takes practice. once u get good at it it wil lbe very easy and u can transffer hre to a laybox if desired. i would say 40 grams and above is a safe weight to breed.. jsut to be safe. u know

Keep in mind that if you have a female with no tail, the weight can be 10% less than that of a female with a tail.

thanks for all your replies. They mated a few days ago so i'll look for eggs in a few weeks.

also, make sure the females get a rested period.. if they dont, it could lead to stress and malnutirion. well nto malnurrition but they need time to build bak up the calcium and whatnot lost from laying eggs

Mine usually weight 38+ grams when gravid

you want the peat moss to be wet enough to clump together when you squeeze it but you don't want it dripping wet. Hope that made cense. :)

if you don twant to dela with lokoing for eggs, i think pputting papertwoels over the regular substrate and adding a laying box would be best. i jus tthougth o fit ranodmly right now based on another expierment with someone putting papertowels ontop of barks to eat. but any who.. why wouldnt it work for breeding right? just put a fewlayers of dry papertowel over ur substrate and then add a small box with a hol ein it with perlite, vermiculate, or moss of some sort with about 1:1 ratio of water to substrate. they will lay in there and then u can eaisly take ut box, incubate eggs, and then remove the papertowels. ez hope this helps
