I'm trying to pick the best substrate for my new Mexican Redknee. It is about 2". I know they are burrowers but I would hate for the substrate to cave in on the spider. My African Black Millipedes make relatively stable burrows in pure peat moss but I suspect tarantulas are more delicate. I've seen caresheets which recommend a peat moss/vermiculite mixture (don't know ratio) but I'm having an impossible time getting vermiculite locally. I can special order it if necessary. On hand I have cactus potting soil, peat moss, dry moss etc. Thanks.

I have my Mexican Red Rump on strictly peat moss and she does just fine. She's only about 2" (got her when she was barely an inch) ...and builds elaborate and stable burrows all over her little viv. I hardly ever even see her, in fact, but the food disappears quickly :D

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help. Here she is exploring the new cage. I'm looking forward to the webbing.
